*Empowering Futures: Tori Harris's Journey Through Alternative Education*
At 18 years old, Tori Harris is navigating her path to success through Dillard Alternative School. Having started her senior year with no credits, Tori found herself in a unique educational setting designed to help students like her catch up and thrive. “I was behind on my credits,” she explains, “and I can get my credits through them [Dillard alternative school].”
Tori’s experience at the alternative school has been enriched by a diverse curriculum that includes in-person math, welding, forestry, and a vocational landscaping program. “Mrs. Mincher mentioned the wildlife safari class and the landscaping sounded more fun,” Tori recalls, highlighting her choice to engage in hands-on learning.
Unlike traditional classes, Tori describes the vocational program as “definitely more hands-on,” allowing her to learn in a way that resonated with her. “I felt like I learned a lot more,” she says, emphasizing the value of practical experience. One of her most memorable lessons involved working with lavender and learning about irrigation systems, a skill she has since applied to projects at home.
The vocational program has not only bolstered Tori’s confidence but has also enhanced her academic performance. “I was able to work on my math a bit from what we learned with the pavers in the [greenhouse] classroom,” she notes, illustrating the program’s integrated approach to education.
As she prepares for the upcoming school year, Tori is optimistic about her future. “If I really work hard, yeah,” she asserts when asked if she feels on track to graduate. Her goals are clear: “Working. Hopefully get my own place, you know? Get my life going a little bit.”
Tori’s journey reflects the game-changing impact of alternative education and vocational training, equipping her with the skills and confidence needed to forge her own path. With the support of her peers and educators, she is not just catching up on credits; she is cultivating a future filled with promise.
